The Challenge
In 2023 Seascape approached us to collaborate on reinventing the Benetau’s smaller First range, while developing it’s new planning cruiser category. The initial brief was open-ended, with uncertainties around boat size, features, and positioning. We proposed a flexible process to help define a shared goal without prematurely fixing details. The challenge was to create a boat that honoured the spirit of the original First series while aligning with the evolving needs and desires of today’s sailors.
Our Approach
We began by conducting a workshop with Beneteau’s sales team to gain insights into the lifestyles, motivations, and aspirations of future First 27-30 users. Utilising the "Jobs to be Done" methodology, we identified a critical target: we sought to develop a new classic - a universal boat, reviving the love for sailing including both the elements of leisure and fun downwind planning.
Given that interior comfort was one of the top priorities, we redefined the traditional design process. Typically, hull design precedes cabin layout, but for this project, we reversed it. We started with designing the most liveable and comfortable boat possible, focusing on making the best use of the limited areas of the interior, that provide standing height. This approach than informed the exterior and hull design, led by Lorenzo Argento and naval architect Sam Manuard.
Physical mock-ups, VR testing and many design iterations, enabled us to fully explore the balance between cabin comfort, sailing performance and price. Finally deciding on making the sailboat two feet longer than first anticipated, allowed us to introduce a two-cabin sailboat, with planning capabilities, at an affordable price. Combining all these features in a smaller sailboat, links the First 30 to the legendary older generations of the range, which started in the year 1977.
The Outcomes
Increased hull size opened up opportunities for innovative features, while low target price required us to focus on solutions that brought the most value to the user. The interior features a unique separation of wet and dry areas, ensuring full standing height in the companionway and galley area, while providing comfort with wooden floorboards in the salon. For cockpit and cabin floor treatment, we replaced traditional EVA foam with a more sustainable cork. The owner's cabin is closed off with magnetic door, we originally designed for the First 27, but is now used as a double door for the first time. To help keep the weight and costs down, we also replaced the wooden cabin storage with removable textile alternative and introduced a simplified kitchen backsplash, designed to integrate additional storage.
Our longstanding collaboration with Seascape enabled us to successfully manage the uncertainties and complexities of this project. Regular meetings, VR walkthroughs, and mockups ensured that we stayed agile, collaborative, and focused on the shared goal. By maintaining open communication and a hands-on approach, we were able to address challenges as they arose and provide expertise throughout the process.
Just as the original First series resonated with sailors in the 70s, the new Beneteau First 30 is set out to bring back the joy of sailing for a new generation.
